Day 10 Rotterdam

Today we visited Rotterdam, and I was intrigued to see what Rotterdam will look like out of all the other towns that we visited. The reason why I was so curious about Rotterdam is because during War World Two Rotterdam was bombed and destroyed. All of Rotterdam’s historical buildings were gone thanks to the Germans. However, over time Rotterdam was able to rebuild their town and gave it a complete makeover.

When arriving in Rotterdam, we met our tour guides and the first thing they showed us was the marketplace that looked like something from the future. If you look up you see this art that is based on like insects, fruits, and if you looked carefully you could see windows and those windows are apartments. Which I thought was super cool because it was an open market but also apartment complex too. Also, inside the market, there was everything you can desire. If you wanted, fresh veggies fruit it was there or desserts, coffee, meats, flower shops, clothing stores anything you needed it was there. It reminded me of a Costco but like from the future.

After walking around the market, we went to see these apartments that have a honeycomb theme. They are these bright yellow houses that straight up remind me of a honeycomb. However, they are known to be called cube houses, but they are not houses. The tour guide said, they are 1-2 bedroom apartments, and they are actually for single people or people that don’t have big families. The cool think about these apartments is the way they are built. They are built in a tilt of over 45 degrees  I couldn’t look inside, but the tour guide said the floor planning is flat but the walls are tilted, and the residents need to go and get special furniture to furnish the apartments. Probably out of all the buildings hands down the cube houses are by far my favorite buildings in the Netherlands.

After looking at the cube houses, we got to ride back to the train station in a water taxi. This reminded me of the ride of Finding Nemo because of the shape of the boat. It was super cool riding it even though it was short because I got to see the whole city and I got to see the Erasmusbrug Bridge and it was beautiful to see it from afar because I was able to see what the tour guide meant on how it looked like a swan.

Overall, Rotterdam is probably the most modern looking town out of all the towns we got to see. Totally worth going and checking the buildings because the style of the architecture is very futuristic and artistic at the same time.
